Tips on ways to help your dog live a long, healthy and happy life

 

 

·         Exercise your dog daily

o   Your dog’s age, overall health and activity level natural to his breed should be taken into account when considering what type of activity your dog needs

o   Your dog should get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day

o   This includes but not limited to walks, fetch, or a game of hide-n-seek

·         Give them toy and food puzzles

o   The brain needs stimulation too

o   You don’t have to just used treats.  You can use their food, peanut butter, plain yogurt, can food, fresh foods.  Be creative!

o   Dogs like to have problems to solve

o   There are toys designed to require work and thought to get the treat out

o   This will help him stay young at heart and occupied to help alleviate boredom and any potential destructiveness

·         Maintain a healthy weight

o   Overweight dogs are at greater risk for a host of diseases, like heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer

o   Feeding your dog the right food for his age, breed, activity level and any health conditions will help maintain his best weight and health

·         Brush teeth regularly

o   Good dental care helps maintain good overall health

o   There are also treats that are good for dental care

o   Let them chew on a bone!

·         Schedule regular visits with the vet

o   Like humans need a yearly wellness exam, dogs also need a yearly exam to ensure his continued good health

·         Give them love and affection daily!

o   The cheapest thing to do to help your dog live a long, healthy, happy life is to shower him with love and affection

o   Give daily scratches.  Along with a good brushing.

o   Cuddle during your favorite show

o   Tell them what a good dog they are!
